The End of Expensive ERP in Small Business

The End of ERP

As I was prepping for my biggest point in this discussion, which is entirely opinion, I walked down memory lane to count the number of MRP and ERP implementations where I’ve either been a key cog in the process, a quarterback, or one of several project managers. If I include niche operating systems (for instance, specialty contractors and blue-collar service and maintenance), that count is more than a dozen.

I will add fewer than a dozen where I’ve provided feedback on what to acquire, how to acquire it, how to implement it, and what not to do during the process.

Does this make me an expert? No. Do I have strong opinions on the waste involved in acquiring and implementing an ERP solution in a small business? The answer is a resounding yes.

Most small businesses under $75 million do not need an ERP solution. Even in retail and eCommerce, there are smart workarounds that can be implemented at a fraction of the cost of, say, NetSuite and still provide superior outcomes. I’m not alone in this thinking.
