Trace Precedents in Excel

One of the reasons I like being on-site with a client is that I get to hang out with the finance team members. I’m always curious what they will have on their Excel icon bars that can be easily customized.

Over a 20-year period, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a financial analyst using the trace precedents function on a complex worksheet. When I show them how to use it, I get the same response, like “That’s very cool” or something similar.

Accordingly, the trace precedents function is vastly underrated, but let’s change that.
